The first is preventative - recognizing and planning for the possibility of a break up of a common law union or marriage.

The second is damage control - dealing with the breakdown. When children are involved even an amicable separation can get complicated, family property and assets need to be divided, support and maintenance issues need to be addressed and last but not the least protection issues need to be dealt with on an urgent basis.
