What is Laser Vision Correction?

Laser vision correction is a modern procedure that is used to rectify short sightedness and long sightedness. Studies show that that 100,000 people in Canada underwent this procedure in 2014. This figure is expected to increase as the popularity of this procedure continues to grow and spread rapidly.

What is Laser Vision Correction Procedure?

This is one of the most common questions among people planning to improve their eyesight using this procedure. Simply put, this is a perfect alternative to the conventional contact lens and eyeglasses. The procedure is tailored to reshape the cornea in a bid to ensure that all light that enters the eye is correctly focused onto the retina. This results in a clearer vision that would not be achieved by other conventional treatment options.

How is the Procedure Done?

For farsightedness, the eye surgeon first uses a femtosecond laser to create a circular and thin flap in the cornea. The flap is then folded to access the underlying section of the cornea referred to as stroma. Parts of the corneal tissue are removed using a special excimer laser. To achieve the best results, a specialized laser that uses cool ultraviolet beam is used to remove microscopic amounts of tissue from the cornea. This helps to reshape it and focus light more accurately for improved eyesight or vision.

For shortsightedness, the cornea is flattened. The same tools and procedure is used to do this. Excimer lasers are also used to correct astigmatism by expertly smoothing irregular cornea to give it a regular shape.

At the tail end of the procedure, the flap is returned to its original position. That is; the flap covers the entire area that the corneal tissue was removed. Only anesthetic drops are administered, and the cornea is allowed to heal naturally.

What to Expect Immediately After the Procedure

Most of the people who underwent this process reported that they felt a temporary itching or burning sensation. You are required to rest for a few minutes before going home. During this period, the surgeon will monitor your behavior to know if indeed the procedure was successful.

You may experience some haziness and blurry vision immediately after the procedure. No need to worry though as eyesight will continuously improve and stabilize as the cornea continues to heal. To achieve the best results, it is recommended to refrain from taking part in strenuous activities such as physical exercises for at least one week. This will give the eye ample time to heal and recover fully.

Benefits of Undergoing Laser Eye Correction

Unlike other surgical procedure, this one is less painful and so you will be able to carry out your normal tasks after a week or less.

Fast Recovery: Recovery from this laser procedure is usually very fast. This is because no stitches or bandages are used.

Delivers Results Fast: Unlike other treatments that provide results after a month, this one offers the results almost immediately. In addition, adjustments can be made later on in life to improve your vision further.
